THE STORY OF PHA KEO

Schreiner Pha Keo in der Werkstatt.

Like so many of the people who found employment at the Smiling Gecko Campus today, carpenter Pha Keo (25) began his life in the slums of Phnom Penh. We do everything we can to ensure that it doesn’t end there.

The dark Khmer Red legacy

In contrast to some regions of Africa, Cambodia actually has significantly better conditions to operate an agricultural economy, for example, as we know it from the neighboring countries Thailand and Vietnam. So why is the country so poor and so backward? A look at the history books helps with the explanation.

A MESSAGE OF HOPE FROM CAMBODIA

The children of our school have recorded a new song. “Heal the World”, the ballad by Michael Jackson, which fits into these crazy times like no other song. Here is the video for it.

HUMANITARIAN AID STILL ESSENTIAL

The consequences of the corona pandemic are still omnipresent in Cambodia. In a country where there is practically no government support, people are still extremely dependent on the humanitarian aid of Smiling Gecko and other international NPOs. We make our contribution, which we must finance entirely from donations. That’s why we are so grateful for any form of support.

In November our “container full of music” filled with lots of pianos, drums, guitars, violins, trumpets and flutes started its journey to Cambodia. Now it has finally reached its destination. The Covid pandemic and its effects have now lasted much longer than anyone had hoped for at the beginning of the crisis, and the situation in Cambodia has continued to deteriorate in 2021. At our school, it’s been a difficult year as well.

Big for small patients

Ärztin spricht mit einer jungen Patientin in der Klinik.

Medical and health care in Kampong Chhnang province is totally inadequate. There is no state or private offer that meets the need. With the “Smiling Gecko Medical and Dental Clinic” on campus, we have therefore established a way to improve this situation.

Before you go...

We would be incredibly grateful for a small donation.

Every amount counts to give people in rural Cambodia a future.
